Don Julio
Julio Gilberto Lopez Arriaga (born January 9, 1960), known professionally as Don Julio, is a Mexicansinger & musician from Mexico City. An icon in the music industry, he is also known for playing lead guitar in bands like Los Atrevidos, Grupo Cuervo, Los Masters, Fantasma, & Nueva Imagen. He’s one of the most established artists out of Oxnard, having successfully performed in a wide range of musical styles, including cumbias, funk, pop, ballads, boleros, corridos, oldies, rock & rap. Don Julio records have been heard worldwide. At the age of 14, he wanted to be a drummer but it wasn’t until his father Daniel S. Lopez bought him his first guitar that he discovered his true passion. With a career spanning over 30 years, Don Julio joined his first band Los Atrevidos at the age of seventeen. It was the year 1976 and the band traveled throughout California from gig to gig gaining lots of exposure. The band was offered a record deal, but broke up soon after do to creative differences in 1979. Don Julio would later form Grupo Cuervo in 1983. Cuervo toured together for three years and eventually split up in 1986 due some disagreements that involved changing band members. In 1987 the Don and a few friends decided to put a band together and call it Los Masters. The band was an instant hit and was booked almost every weekend for almost several years straight. After a couple of band members got into a fight one night in 1996, Don Julio decided to leave the band. It wasn’t long until the Don had another trick up his sleeve and put together a band with two of his sons Shade(Keyboard), Mista Clean (Bass), nephew Danny Lopez(Drums) and Don Julio himself (Guitar/Lead Singer). The band went by the name Nueva Imagen meaning New Image and began playing local gigs in 1997. These days, the band has been working on individual solo projects but still performs together from time to time when a gig calls for Don Julio and his Nueva Imagen. Occasionally, the Don would collaborate with other local musicians as the lead guitarist of the band Fantasma which was active from 2002-2005 until Don Julio decided to focus on studio projects. In 2010, Don Julio released his debut solo album Blanco. It was the first Latin music album out of Playground Records, and one of the most popular. Don Julio has returned to the studio and is currently recording his follow up album titled Reposado and is set to release late 2017.
